Xenosaga Episode II Official Complete Guide

This is a section for the Japanese Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose Official Complete Guide in order to give people an overview of its contents. While a database was not included in the game like with Episode I or Episode III, one was provided in this book. The staff interviews have already been translated in the Xenosaga interviews section, so links to those interviews are provided from the contents page below. However, there appear to be no proper lore pages in the book, and Enterbrain's designated lore writer for Xenosaga source books, Kenichi Shinjō, is not credited on the credits page. Though that is probably because this book, unlike the Episode I books and the Episode III Perfect Guide, was not published by Enterbrain but by Namco itself.

Xenosaga Supervision and Original Concept
A message from Tetsuya Takahashi

When writing this article, I was initially asked to "talk about the theme of this work, the realm beyond good and evil," but in reality, there's an internal reason why it's impossible to discuss the theme without mentioning Episode III, as will be explained later. In short, although 'Xenosaga' is divided into three (+) episodes, it is a single continuous story focusing on events in the T.C. 4000s.

With only one episode left of 'Xenosaga,' it's safe to say that almost all the fundamental information has been revealed in this Episode II. At the heart of this information are Zohar and U-DO; all the surrounding information is based on [related to] these two. Furthermore, it should be added that Zohar and U-DO are "in a sense" synonymous. What happened in Shion's and Jin's past? Why did Dimitri Yuriev create the U.R.T.V. series, including Jr.? What did Joachim entrust to MOMO? What is Ziggy's relationship with his nemesis, Voyager? What is the man in the red cloak trying to accomplish? What is the true nature of Zarathustra as described by Wilhelm? What are the fates of chaos, KOS-MOS, Nephilim, and the mysterious boy who appeared at the end of Episode I?

All the information and its future converge on the beings Zohar and U-DO, the true theme and real subtitle of Xenosaga, "that word." "The Will to Power" and "Beyond Good and Evil" are merely slightly different forms of that word. The main theme remains the same throughout Episodes I-III.

Faced with this theme, how will the characters behave and what choices will they make, and what kind of endings await them in the future? To be honest, I, the original author, am endlessly fascinated by this. The work 'Xenosaga' has already left the nest and is continuing to grow, choosing its own future of its own free will. And the future is not immutable. There is a possibility that it will lead to an ending different from the one prepared at this point. I hope you will continue to follow 'Xenosaga' for a while longer to see what possible events await them in the future, and that you will witness their growth in the final episode, III.

[Study Guide comment:
When Takahashi says that Xenosaga is "three (+) episodes" he is most likely referring also to surrounding material like Xenosaga Pied Piper. The decision to end Xenosaga with Episode III was clearly made prior to the release of Episode II. When he alludes to "that word" there seems to be little context, but since he is talking about a consistent theme I assume he means "fear," though I don't know why he keeps it hidden here when he has already spoken of it in Episode I materials. But I guess what he has spoken of before is what he is alluding to.]

Xenosaga EPISODE II Technical term description
To help you enjoy the story more, let's explain the specialized terminology that appears in the game. This includes terms from both Episode II and Episode I.

   Alphabet

A.G.W.S.
A.G.W.S. is an abbreviation for Anti-Gnosis Weapon System. While generally humanoid, it can take on various other forms. Its weight is comparable to that of a large passenger car, and its size is small. Furthermore, the A.G.W.S. employs a transfer-type generator as its propulsion system, directly transferring drive energy and propellant for spatial maneuvering from the mother ship, allowing it to operate semi-permanently as long as the mother ship is not destroyed. The A.G.W.S. widely used by the military and other organizations is a mass-produced model manufactured by Hyams Heavy Industries, while the Vector Industries version is currently undergoing trial operation for civilian sales. In terms of specifications, the Vector Industries A.G.W.S. boasts higher performance.

A.M.W.S.

E.S.

mtDNA
MtDNA is an abbreviation for Mitochondria DNA. It is the DNA contained in mitochondria in the cytoplasm, and is characterized by greater individual variation than "nuclear DNA" in the cell nucleus, making it a focus of attention in recent evolutionary research. Furthermore, since mtDNA is inherited only from the mother, the presence of females is essential for its preservation to the next generation. For this reason, Yuriev, the creator, created the U.R.T.V. female body, which prioritizes the preservation of mtDNA.

U.M.N.

[Page 053 - Translated by machine]

U.M.N. Phase Transition Cannon
The phase transition cannon mounted on Proto-Omega. Unlike ordinary phase transition cannons, it can fire via UMN, allowing it to reliably hit targets no matter where they are. Furthermore, the phase transition cannon is a weapon that utilizes the vacuum phase transition phenomenon, and it works by generating a local phase transition at a given coordinate, distorting space and annihilating the target.

Connection project: U.M.N. / Omega

U.R.T.V.
An abbreviation for U-DO Retro Virus. It refers to artificially cultured infants that have been modified to form thought waves that are the inverse phase of the waveform that generates U-DO. Dr. Dimitri Yuriev created a total of 669 individuals as the anti-existence of U-DO. These can be classified into two types based on the strain of the fertilized egg: one is the X-type "female body" which prioritizes the preservation of "mtDNA," and the other is the Y-type "male body." The final male-to-female ratio shows that the number of female bodies is overwhelmingly smaller. This is due not only to the fact that fewer female bodies were produced than male bodies, but also because many individuals that possessed the same level of potential as male bodies were "discarded" because they could not perform to their full potential. Normal female and male bodies are collectively called "standard bodies," while the mutated Jr., Gaignun, and Albedo are called "mutants." [Their] father is Yuriev, but the identity of [their] mother remains unknown.

The Man in the Red Robe

Anima Vessel
A mysterious object said to have been discovered around the same time as the Zohar. Its shape resembles a human brain, and it can be used as a weapon like the E.S. by attaching an outer shell, but its original purpose remains unknown. Incidentally, "anima" is one of the archetypes proposed by Jung, referring to the feminine element that exists in the male unconscious.

Connection: E.S. / Archetype / Zohar

Abyss

Abel's Ark
Immediately after the local phenomenon shift caused by Albedo disappeared, accompanied by a massive wave... The largest Gnosis to appear. Abel's Ark, which was lost after absorbing the original Zohar, had the appearance of a battleship, and held something that looked like a planet in its center. Just as Wilhelm described Albedo as the one who would "open the door to Abel's Ark," it seems that Wilhelm's objective lies beyond the appearance of the ark. The Old Testament describes "Abel" as the son of Adam, and the "ark" on which Noah, the seventh-generation descendant of Abel, rode.

Ariadne

Andrew

Yeshua / Yehoshua [spelled "YHVShVa" next to it]
This is the name Wilhelm used for chaos. This word is Hebrew, and it is said that it later evolved from the Greek-style spelling "Iesus" to become the origin of "Jesus." It also appears in the Old Testament as the name of Moses' successor, and is the name of the land of Canaan in Israel, which he conquered. The word "Canaan" also appears in the line "Cannan, our land is there" in the [Galaxy Federation logo].

Phase Space
A space obtained by the direct product of "real space," where position is represented by coordinates, and "velocity space," where velocity is represented by coordinates. It is generally considered to be 6-dimensional.

[Page 055 - Translated by machine]

Interlink
This is a form of communication that involves physically connecting two individuals, also known as "memory linking," allowing them to share memories and conscious awareness. Interlinking is typically done via a control device implanted in the body and using U.M.N. lines. Joachim was researching how to create a human-like Realien for his daughter Sakura so that he could interlink with her senses. Given that this research took place before the Miltia conflict, it is presumed that the "human-like Realien" Sakura was referring to was MOMO.

Related: U.M.N. / Miltian Conflict / Realien

U-DO
An abbreviation for Unus Mundus Drive Operation. U-DO refers to the Zohar control system that functions as the core of U.M.N., but almost everything about its true nature remains a mystery. There is a theory that it is an "artificial consciousness with dangerous waves," but it does not seem to be the work of humans. U.R.T.V., which possesses anti-U-DO waves, was created as an anti-existence. The U.R.T.V. units deployed to Old Miltia during the Miltia Conflict were driven to the brink of madness by a runaway U-DO.

Related: U.M.N. / U.R.T.V. / Unus Mundus / Zohar / Third Type Armament / Song of Nephilim / Anti-U-DO Wave / Anti-Existence / Miltian Conflict / Red Dragon

Unus Mundus
The term "Unus Mundus" comes from the Latin word meaning "unified world" or "one world." Psychologist Carl Jung used this name to describe the "transcendent higher structure" he proposed. He considered Unus Mundus to be the ultimate world where the distinction between mind and matter disappears and merges, and which exists in the realm of the unconscious. Furthermore, he attempted to explain the complementary and interconnected relationships between minds and minds, and between mind and matter, based on the premise that this is shared by all phenomena.

Connection: U.M.N. / Y Data / U-DO / Synchronicity

Voyager

Eternal Chain
These are the words Wilhelm addressed to the man in the white cloak. The fact that he reads this as "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" suggests that it refers to the fundamental idea of "eternal recurrence" advocated in the philosopher Nietzsche's work "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." This idea is "a view of time in which what has happened once is repeated infinitely without the slightest difference," and the expression of an eternally continuing ring is fitting from the meaning of this idea.

Related items: Zarathustra

Encephalon

Omega System
An unknown object. Its original purpose is unknown, and it took its current form through the U-TIC organization led by Joachim. Initially, the Pope [Patriarch] intended to activate the Omega System using Zohar's control system as a medium, but he was forced to directly absorb Zohar. As a result, the Omega System went out of control, ultimately destroying Old Miltia.

Related: Zohar / Proto Omega

[Page 056 - Translated by machine]

Original Zohar

Caspase
He is a captain in the Marine Corps of the Galaxy Federation Government. He worked in the Realien adjustment room aboard the cruiser Woglinde, where he was responsible for inputting and adjusting the tactical algorithms of the combat Realiens installed on the ship. Incidentally, he and Virgil were classmates at the military academy.

Related items: Kevin Winnicott / Virgil / Realien

Catherine
Name of a Realien. She is Febronia's younger sister and is called "Cathe" by Shion. Along with Cecilia, she had fused with the Zohar control system at the heart of Labyrinthos, losing her individual functions and consciousness. Nephilim and Febronia had asked Shion to free them, that is, to destroy the Zohar control system and shut down all of Cecilia and Catherine's biological functions.

Connection: Cecilia / Zohar / Febronia / Realien

Pseudo emotions
Something similar to human emotions. During the analysis conducted at the U.M.N. Management Center, the mass-produced 100-Series stated that MOMO possesses a simulated personality capable of expressing pseudo-emotions [artificial emotion]. However, when MOMO was created, the Realians were typically subjected to emotional suppression. After the establishment of the Miltian Charter, emotional suppression for Realians was prohibited with some exceptions, but MOMO had not been subjected to emotional suppression even before the charter's enactment, and a simulated personality was even prepared as an option for interpersonal skills, indicating that Joachim treated her as something more than just a Realian.

Related: Realien

Mental disorder / Organic Disability
A disorder that occurs when biological tissue is deformed, degenerated, or destroyed. In Sakura's case, the disorder was caused by an organic defect in which "hypersensitivity to the synchronicity of U.M.N. led to instability in the control of electrical potential pulses in the brain, resulting in a disruption of the brain's neural network," which prevented her from "perceiving the external world and expressing her inner self."

Related items: U.M.N. / Pulse

Reverse phase / Antiphase
This describes a state where the polarity of a signal is reversed. Polarity refers to the electrical bias present within a molecule. When considering inverse phase, imagine a waveform that is the exact opposite of a given waveform.

Old Miltia

Synchronicity
A term from Jungian psychology, "Catherine's biomechanism." It refers to the correspondence between mentally imagined events and real-world occurrences. Jung discussed this using the concept of "Unus Mundus." According to him, the world called Unus Mundus is shared by all people and things, and allows for mutual complementarity and connection between minds and minds, and between mind and matter. This, he argues, allows the mental world to influence the material world.

Related: Unus Mundus / Organic Disorder

Local Phenomenon Transition / Local Matter Shift
Mysterious phenomena caused by the Original Zohar or Zohar Emulators. Currently, the main localized phenomenon shifts confirmed are: during the excavation of the Original Zohar, during the U-TIC's experiment connecting Zohar Emulators, and when Albedo linked with U-DO. When this phenomenon occurs, people suddenly disappear, or people and planets become Gnosis.

The Man in the Black Robe

Gnosis
The word "Gnosis" means "knowledge" or "perception" in Greek. In the story, it refers to the mysterious beings that began to appear in large numbers after the Miltian Conflict. There are various types of Gnosis in appearance, and they appear as if attracted to the Original Zohar or Zohar Emulators. Although the Gnosis threatens human life, they are non-physical beings, so to attack them, they need to be physically fixed in place using the "Hilbert Effect" installed in the 100-Series General Observation Realien or KOS-MOS. Furthermore, Gnosis have the ability to transform those they touch into something like sodium chloride (NaCl) or other Gnosis, or to assimilate with weapons such as A.G.W.S. Therefore, they have come to be treated as a symbol of death in the space age. Incidentally, according to a report by the Kukai Foundation that studied the remains of physically fixed Gnosis, "The composition of Gnosis is mostly water and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)."

Kevin Winnicott
He was Shion's superior and lover, serving as the chief engineer for the project. Kevin gave her glasses as a gift. He died two years ago in the Archetype runaway accident. Not only was he the chief engineer for KOS-MOS's development, but Shion's comment to Caspase, "I've heard it all from my mentor," indicates that he also possessed deep knowledge of the Realians. Furthermore, the development of the machine that transforms into E.S. Dinah was also Kevin's doing. From this point, it can be inferred that his involvement was not limited to just the KOS-MOS body.

Connection: E.S. / Archetype / Caspase / Spacecraft / Realien

Sacecraft / Spaceplane
This spacecraft was developed by Kevin concurrently with the KOS-MOS project. It is located in the Dämmerung's Critical Control Zone dock and is classified as AA-rank confidential within Vector Corporation. It is capable of hyperspace travel without going through the U.M.N. and was used by Shion and others when they escaped the Dämmerung. From past interactions between Kevin and Shion, it is clear that this spacecraft was developed as equipment for KOS-MOS. It can also transform into E.S. Dinah by combining with the Tub-Bike.

Natural Wave / Intrinsic Wave
These are the unique thought waves that each U.R.T.V. possesses. In order to perform a mental link that amplifies the anti-U-DO wave, the thought waves of each U.R.T.V. must be tuned to a specific wavelength.

Related topics: U.R.T.V. / Thought Waves / Mental Link / Anti-U-DO Waves

Cybernetic Engineering
Cybernetic engineering is a field of study that systematically investigates the relationship between the brain and nerve cells called "neurons." Juli is well-versed in cybernetic engineering, which can be seen in the scene where MOMO asks Juli to adjust Ziggy.

Telepathy
It is the release of a powerful force of thought into the external world, becoming an energy wave. U.R.T.V. appears as an entity created through genetic manipulation to be able to form a specific thought wave (a single inherent wave).

Artificial Cultured Childen
A U.R.T.V. is a child that has been artificially grown by culturing a fertilized egg in a capsule. U.R.T.V.s are also artificially cultured babies; they have parents at the genetic level, but they were not actually born from a mother's body.

Related: U.R.T.V. / Designer Children

Spiritual Link
The goal is to link thought waves. By aligning the thought waves possessed by the U.R.T.V.s to a specific wavelength, a mental link can be established, and this synergistic effect can generate a massive anti-U-DO wave.

Cecilia
Name of a Realien. She is Febronia's younger sister, and Shion calls her "Cecily." She and Catherine were fused with the system that controls Zohar, and the system is showing them illusions.

Related: Catherine / Zohar / Febronia / Realien

Zohar
A mysterious energy source. Immediately after the Zohar was unearthed by archaeologist Masuda in A.D. 20XX, a series of mysterious disappearances began to occur. This is believed to be the first localized phenomenon shift, and humanity, taking the situation seriously, was forced to leave Earth.

Zohar [continued]

It was lost. 4000 years later, it was enshrined in Labyrinthos, a facility of the U-TIC organization, and researched by Joachim. Subsequently, during the Miltian Conflict, U-DO went out of control, and the Zohar was sealed in the Abyss along with Miltia, but Albedo was able to break the seal. Currently, it is absorbed into a massive Gnostis called "Abel's Ark" and is in a lost state. Incidentally, the origin of the word "Zohar" lies in "Kabbalah," the secret knowledge that is said to be the basis of alchemy and mysticism, and its name can be found in one of its great scriptures, "The Book of Splendor (sefer ha zohar)." The proposition of this book can be expressed in one word: "eternal recurrence." This inspired Nietzsche's thought.

[Study Guide comment:
I don't know who wrote the entries in this glossary, but Nietzsche's reading library is well-documented and it does not include Kabbalah or the Zohar, and Nietzsche routinely rejected esoteric, occult, and mystical frameworks. Maybe the entry here merely meant to say eternal recurrence inspired Nietzsche's thought, and that the proposition of Sefer ha-zohar is, whether known to Nietzsche or not, also a form of cosmic cycles. If so it would make sense, but the way the paragraph flows, and the way it came out in machine translation, is easy to misinterpret.]

Third Armament [Tertiary Weapons System]

Tub-Bike
The KOS-MOS adjustment Tub was located at Vector Industries' Second Development Bureau. When the spacecraft carrying Shion was attacked by an unidentified mobile weapon, it transformed into a space-type motorcycle in response. The Tub-Bike can dock with the spacecraft to transform into E.S. Dinah.

Zarathustra
A character from "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," a work by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" is a representative work of Nietzsche's later thought, and it was the first to fully develop the idea of "eternal recurrence," which has had a profound impact on modern society.

Related: Eternal Chain / Zohar

Designer Child
This term refers to a child created through genetic manipulation to meet the needs of the parents or those who need it. In this fiction, it refers to U.R.T.V., an artificially cultured child, and is used by Canaan.

Related: U.R.T.V. / Artificially cultured infant

Testament
A word meaning "last will and testament" or "Bible." In the story, it refers to the cloaked men who suddenly appeared within the Omega System, and is the name used by the Pope [Patriarch]. There are currently four confirmed members, and they possess extraordinary abilities that defy common sense, such as instantly eliminating Proto-Omega or instantly teleporting rocket missiles fired by Ziggy. Virgil, one of the Testaments, previously told Shion and the others, "The laws of this world are different for you and me." This statement likely reveals the true nature of the Testaments, who are beyond the reach of ordinary people.

Nanotherapy / Nano Treatment

Nanomachine
These are microscopic, molecular-sized machines. They come in various types depending on their application, from repairing body tissue to modifying planets, and are used in healing items and Ether. Furthermore, the mechanisms of nanomachines are not uniform, ranging from those composed of proteins to mechanically operated ones. Among them, a particularly versatile type is the "environmental bug" (also known as the "environmental insect"), which works to maintain a clean environment in enclosed spaces. This nanomachine was developed by Joachim Mizrahi.

Neural Monitoring
This involves monitoring and controlling the neural circuits of the brain. It was performed by operators at the Yuriev Institute during the Sakura treatment experiment conducted by U.R.T.V. From the operators' interactions, it can be seen that the goal was to stabilize membrane potential and spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) frequencies.

Nephilim
The name of the mysterious girl who appears before Shion and her companions, delivering various messages. Because she and Febronia exist in another dimension, they can only interfere with the real world for a short time. Many mysteries remain, such as why she sends messages to Shion and her connection to the Song of Nephilim developed by Joachim Mizrahi. Furthermore, since she also appears before chaos and engages in direct dialogue with him, it is speculated that there is some kind of relationship between the two. The etymology of the name comes from "Nephilim," a general term in the Bible for those born between the gigantic angels known as the Grigori and humans. It is said that 200 giants, sent down to Earth by the Creator to watch over humanity, married human daughters, and their children (=Nephilim) were also giants exceeding 1000m in height.

Related: Encephalon / Febronia

Song of Nephilim

Telepathy / Telepathy Talk
The ability to communicate thoughts without using voice. U.R.T.V. members can communicate telepathically using their individual thought waves. As seen when Gaignun used a mental link to find Albedo and communicate with him telepathically, physical distance seems to be no obstacle if a link is possible. In the story, something resembling telepathy was also seen between chaos and Wilhelm.

Hyper-Space Navigation
This is a navigation method that allows for instantaneous long-distance travel by transitioning from normal space to hyperspace, a special dimension. In most cases, it is essential to use U.M.N., and there is a charge to use the transfer gate to hyperspace. Hyperspace is visually tubular, and contact with the inner wall of the tube, which is the boundary, can cause disintegration to the subatomic level.

Related: U.M.N. / Spacecraft

Anti-U-DO Wave
This refers to the thought waves generated by U.R.T.V.s. Because it has a waveform with the opposite phase to U-DO, it can cancel out the waves generated by U-DO. The energy supply to mobile weapons that use Zohar as an energy source utilizes these U-DO waves, and the significance of deploying U.R.T.V. units in the Miltian Conflict was to disrupt this energy supply.

Anti-Existence
An entity that is the opposite of a specific target. In the story, U.R.T.V.s and U-DO were treated as anti-existences, each possessing waves of opposite phase. During the Miltian Conflict, Jr., who was deployed as part of the U.R.T.V. unit, realized that the clash of anti-existences could be converted into heat energy, and in order to avoid this being caused by the clash of mental waves, he was forced to abandon the emission of waves.

It seems to be related to reopening the door to Lost Jerusalem, which Joachim is believed to have opened, but the details remain unknown.

Proto Omega
Located in the deepest part of Labyrinthos, this colossal object forms the core of the Omega System. Proto-Omega absorbed the original Zohar and uses it as its power source. Built by the U-TIC organization, Proto-Omega is equipped with a U.M.N. phase transition cannon, which the Pope [Patriarch] intended to use to bring the entire galaxy under Ormus's rule.

Conjoined Twins
Conjoined twins are identical twins born with parts of their bodies fused together. In the case of Jr. and Albedo, they were born with their backs fused together. The probability of conjoined twins being born is one in several million, and it occurs when the division of a single fertilized egg is delayed or incomplete, resulting in this fused state.

Red Dragon
This is Jr.'s combat mode designed to fight U-DO. When Jr. becomes enraged, his body glows red. It is unknown what kind of power is unleashed in this mode, or what changes occur in Jr. himself. However, from the conversation between Citrine and Nigredo, it seems certain that this mode is dangerous.
