Xenosaga Episode I Official Complete Guide

This is a translation page for the Japanese Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht Official Complete Guide, perhaps mostly of interest for its small "lore mysteries section" toward the end of the book. Or, as jetfuel's old GameFAQs guide states: "In the back of the Xenosaga [Episode I] Complete Guide, there is a section titled, 'The MYSTERY in which it was sealed'. It's a list of questions about the storyline and some mildly helpful responses. Here is that section as painstakingly translated by jetfuel."

Since the translation by jetfuel is very incomplete (he barely finished the first page and there are four pages), was translated pre-Episode II, and is also not very good, I will complement it with a machine translation and possibly the contributions of other people. I have also added some post-Xenosaga Episode III commentary and reflections. Based on a comment by dedicated Xenogears and Xenosaga fan Trexalfa before I lost contact with him, I have also added machine translations of most of the "lore" pages. This is what he said:

"The foreword, the character profiles and the mysteries section are worth a check, even if the story commentary has certain parts that might shed light on some of the most obtuse stuff happening on screen. The foreword is Zohar centric, its flavour is pretty similar to the Perfect Works speculation on the Zohar as it was discovered. The character profiles also have some stuff that might prove interesting; for example, chaos' profile highlights his status as KOS-MOS' counterpart, as well as the only guide I've ever seen to speculate that, perhaps, his power is related to the magnification of entropy, which actually proves insightful given the Failsafe's function."

Mainly translated by machine, but also by jetfuel and others

History continues uninterrupted

   4.6 billion years ago.
From a scorching hot planet where rocks melt to a blue planet overflowing water, the growth of a star as a system without life. The era of Earth's birth.
Simple life forms born in the hellish atmosphere evolved into multicellular organisms, transforming into diverse life forms. Many life forms were born, and many perished. Genes changed due to internal and external factors. Birth and elimination repeated.
The birth of humankind, recognizing itself [self-aware], caring for others, and contemplating the past and future. The budding of civilization. Brilliant ideas. Shattered ideals. A blood-stained history.
Zohar existed there long before human history began to flourish.

   A.D. 20XX.
Ruins related to the Zohar have been discovered by human hands at Lake Turkana in Kenya.
A place buried in the darkness of history. A forgotten place.
However, an object whose perception ceases to exist is not therefore denied as a physical entity. Even if a species of life like humanity, which came into existence by chance, forgets, events that existed before the birth of that life form will continue to exist unchanged. Even if no one remembers Zohar, Zohar will continue to exist without disappearing.

   T.C. 4767.
Born from the accidents of history, humanity, fueled by the power of civilization developed in search of meaning in its origins, had moved its sphere of activity into the vast universe. However, no matter how far its base of operations expanded, humanity as a species could not overcome the death that was its destiny.
Humankind, ignorant of the meaning of birth, feared annihilation through death. Therefore, they questioned their own existence and sought power to resist inevitable death. Some sought power to resist oblivion, others to resist decay, and still others to directly confront death itself. All power was sought to overcome death.
Humankind has conjured up symbols of death. These symbols have been present in the past: in the age of wild beasts, in the age of disease, in the age of the Grim Reaper, in the age of war, and in the age of the tragic damage caused by civilization. These symbols change with the changing environment. And for humanity, as it has expanded into vast spaces, the symbol of death has been the Gnosis.
To overcome the symbols of death throughout history, humanity has sought and cultivated physical power. This was because it was easy to understand and utilize. In addition, it offered significant practical benefits. However, by focusing too much on this direction, humanity became powerless against non-physical phenomena.
The Gnosis were like holograms, invulnerable to any weaponry created by humanity. These mere images unilaterally wielded destructive power against humankind. Powerless humanity could only repeatedly engage in futile pleas and desperate escapes.
At that time, humanity sought to acquire new powers to counter the Gnosis. In their search for a new direction, humanity gave rise to numerous ideologies and created an era of quiet conflict, where various motives intertwined in a complex web.
Zohar has always been present alongside humanity's history of struggle.

It may be because a possibility of having got and surpassing death was taken in.
SHION UZUKI
The Tale Which She Hid...

[Profile]
Born in T.C. 4745. Age 22. Chief of the
Integrated Operation System Development Project
for the KOS-MOS Development Project at Vector's
First R&D Division. Boards the Woglinde for the
KOS-MOS activation experiment. The protagonist.

As a member of Vector's First R&D Division and the chief engineer of the KOS-MOS development project, she harbored a sense of emptiness rooted in death. The death of her parents in her childhood, and the death of the man she called her lover two years prior--death had always been close to her.
For her, death was "separation" itself. The parting with the person with whom she had opened her heart and shared her feelings left an unfillable hole in her heart, a void leading to an abyss. Gazing into that hole, she sought the strength to reject it in order to live out her life, which was permeated with the scent of death. Life is like a slope that titls and tumbles down towards death. That's why she thought she couldn't live unless she actively rejected it. By discarding pessimism and contemplating the future, she came to terms with the emptiness of death.
Her seemingly carefree optimism and actions were rooted in a deep understanding of the harsh realities of life. This understanding gave her a powerful vitality; it was what sustained her ability to live.
When she was attacked by the Gnosis within the Woglinde and faced the brink of death, she resisted with all her might to survive. For her, who always looked to the future, resisting an opponent she could not defeat was a natural reaction. However, when she found herself in an inescapable situation, she accepted death with surprising ease. This resignation, too, was natural for her, as she had always felt death close by. She could not reject death. But that did not mean that she could accept the fact that she was living towards death. She knew this. That is why she resisted to the very last moment, and in the final, futile moments, she resigned herself to death.
Death was like a ghost lurking in her mind. When Shion witnessed the Gnosis, she thought that the death in her mind had manifested as an illusion.
An entity that can perceive being touched, yet cannot be touched. An entity that cannot be killed, even if killed. An entity that drifts like a ghost in the physical world. A living delusion. Gnosis. The system that transformed this entity, which is merely perceived by the brain, into an entity that can be physically interacted with, was the "Hilbert Effect."
Could the Hilbert Effect be described as a system that can fix delusions lurking in the brain and memories stored within them into the real world? If Gnosis, such as the delusion of death, can be fixed into reality, then surely memories themselves can also be fixed into reality. A lost past. Untouchable memories. Events that exist only as information. Dreams that surface as noise during memory processing. A system that fixes the reality of those dreams into the material world.
The reason Shion was so passionate about developing KOS-MOS, who could activate the Hilbert Effect, might be that, in addition to carrying on the will of her deceased lover, it was also due to her unhealing grief and sense of loss over her past, and her fleeting hope for the Hilbert Effect.
However, no one knows what's truly in her heart. That's because she interacts with others through words and actions that look towards the future. Without outwardly displaying the shackles of the past, she strongly restrains her own heart, and through that strength, she gains the resilience to live.

[Page 008-009 - Translated by machine]

It was a system called KOS-MOS artificially built by technology.
KOS-MOS
The Tale Which She Hid...

[Profile]
An android, rare in this era, whose entire
body is made of machinery. While prioritizing
logic, efficiency and mission in all its actions,
it is programmed to unconditionally protect
its chief developer, Shion, above all else.

KOS-MOS is an acronym for "Kosmos Obey Strategical Multiple Operation Systems," a strategic multi-purpose control system developed by the interstellar conglomerate Vector Industries. In other words, KOS-MOS is not a proper noun referring to a single female android, but rather a collective term for a combat system and humanoid extermination weapon developed for use against the Gnosis. However, for the developers, including Shion, and those around them, the name "KOS-MOS" referred to the beautiful girl with the cold expression standing before them.
KOS-MOS prioritizes three principles in all situations: logic, efficiency, and task. The task is the objective to be achieved, while logic and efficiency are the methods of exploration and selection criteria used when determining the actions necessary to achieve that objective.
Prioritizing the safety of Shion Uzuki, who is programmed as a developer, is also part of the mission. Furthermore, the act of causing death to a Galaxy Federation soldier during the battle with the Gnosis within the Valkyrie is also a highly logical decision made to ensure the mission's success with a high probability.
One of KOS-MOS' greatest functions as an anti-Gnosis humanoid extermination weapon is the Hilbert Effect, which fixes Gnosis within a deployment radius of several hundred astronomical units into physical entities. After fixing the unknown Gnosis into an ordered physical entity, it is then attacked by its loaded weaponry with physical offensive capabilities. KOS-MOS' combat logic is to destroy and annihilate in a logically understandable way.
For KOS-MOS, human life is merely one of many factors in completing her mission. The same applies to her own body. That was the logic flow of KOS-MOS, the combat system itself. The inseparable attachment that humans have to their own bodies, the fear of losing their bodies. Such emotions do not exist for KOS-MOS. That was the system KOS-MOS was, artificially constructed through technology.
However, the KOS-MOS mainframe continues to evolve through the construction of new networks. This is similar to how the synaptic connections in a living organism's brain are renewed and developed by internal and external factors, and can be called the growth of KOS-MOS. What this growth brings about, and what the growth itself signifies, is beyond the developers' understanding and intentions.

ZIGGY
The Tale Which He Hid...

[Profile]
Born in T.C. 4637. A combat cyborg, he is
deployed to the Contact Subcommittee established
within the Federal Government. He was ordered by
the Subcommittee to rescue MOMO, who had been
captured by the U-TIC organization. During their
escape, he ends up traveling with Shion and others.

The official name of the cyborg is Ziggurat 8.
Born in T.C. 4637, he was the commander of a detachment of the Federal Police's 1875th Special Operations Command, and had a wife and child. However, in T.C. 4667, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with his pistol. Officially, it was ruled a death in the line of duty. Later, under the Life Recycling Act, he was resurrected as a cyborg and returned to service.
His name in life was Jan Sauer. He lost his wife and child before his death in the line of duty. Even after being resurrected as a cyborg, he retained the memories of his wife and child, and continued to live with the grief of losing his loved ones, in a body that does not allow him to escape the sorrow of death. Nearly 100 years have already passed since his resurrection.
In the initial stages of resurrection, many biological components remained. However, as if cutting away memories of the past, he successively replaced these biological components with mechanical ones. This act ultimately resulted in tuning up his cyborg body, allowing him to retain high capabilities.
Once a subject dies, their legal status becomes that of public property. Therefore, they do not have the power of life and death over their own will. In other words, the act of self-harm, such as suicide, is suppressed. Seeking death to escape an unforgettable past, he desires increasingly dangerous missions. However, due to his high mission-execution ability, he successfully completes one low-success-rate mission after another, increasing his reputation within the Federation.
He does not fear death. However, due to the safety net imposed on him as an official cyborg against abandoning his duties, he takes a negative stance towards reckless acts and pointless combat. Not to protect his life, but to complete his mission. His heart yearns for death and oblivion, while the safety net gives him the will to complete his mission. A century of internal conflict tears and holds his heart together, yet also binds it together, bound by the shackles of memories from his past life.
He was then assigned to the task of recovering the 100-Series Observational Realian Prototype, which had been seized by the U-TIC organization, and was deployed to the Contact Subcommittee. After completing the mission, his wish was to have his memories of his past life erased. He wanted a legal death, a complete erasure of his past self, by having his remaining biological brain replaced with mechanical parts.
Having longed for a human death, his encounter with the 100-Series Observational Realian, who desires to become human, causes him to view his memories of his child with a different perspective than before. However, this shift in his emotions would later torment him.

[Page 012-013 - Translated by machine]

As for her, it is here as a person after the death way.
M.O.M.O.
The Tale Which She Hid...

[Profile]
The prototype of the 100-Series Realian,
originally belonging to the Galaxy Federation,
was captured by the U-TIC organization. It was
developed by Joachim Mizrahi and his wife, Juli.
Outwardly, it appears to be around 12 years old, and
is based on Joachim's deceased daughter, Sakura.

This is a prototype of the 100-Series General Observation Realian, developed to capture the elusive Gnosis that brings inescapable death to humanity. The 100-Series General Observation System integrates the D.S.S.S. (Double Slit Sensory System), an imaginary number domain perception device, with the Hilbert Effect.
The 100-Series System requires a system volume of several tens of tons, making it theoretically impossible to downsize to a humanoid form. The mass-produced 100-Series General Observation Realian, officially adoped by the Galaxy Federation Army, is a personal device designed to operate a large 15-meter-square system. MOMO was created as a prototype for this mass-produced model.
The developers are Dr. Joachim Mizrahi, the founder of the U-TIC organization, and his wife, Dr. Juli Mizrahi. MOMO's appearance is modeled after their deceased daughter, Sakura Mizrahi. The emotional rift between Joachim and Juli over Sakura's illness. Joachim is shocked by Sakura's death. MOMO's appearance is that of a substitute for their daughter. Juli's emotional wounds are reopened by seeing her. The emotional distance between MOMO and the two doctors is even greater because they are not even a temporary parent and child.
However, MOMO cherishes Joachim and Juli, who gave birth to her, as her father and mother, believes in her father's words, and dreams of the day when she can become human. Rather than seeking a physical transformation into a human being, it could be said that she seeks to be called to heaven as a human being where her father Joachim is, thus seeking to experience what it means to be human after death.
The Hilbert Effect has the same functionality in both the mass-produced and prototype versions. Its effective range is only about a dozen meters in radius without amplification by an amplifier. However, its effectiveness is comparable to that of the Hilbert Effect installed in KOS-MOS.
As a prototype, MOMO possesses unique information that sets her apart from the mass-produced model. Because she harbors forbidden information left behind by Joachim, she is destined to be targeted by many organizations and individuals. This destiny leads her to encounter Shion, KOS-MOS, Ziggy, chaos, and Jr., fostering various emotions within their hearts. Human interaction, conversation, and connection; accepting the memories of others, experiencing their feelings, and gaining various emotions through one's own inner workings--isn't this relationship a crucial element of what makes us human? Considering this, couldn't we say that MOMO is no longer merely a prototype of the 100-Series General Observation Realians, but has already been established as an individual human being?

[Page 014-015 - Translated by machine]

He may become the existence, which guides the people in when.
chaos
The Tale Which He Hid...

[Profile]
He met Matthews several years ago and works
as a crew member on the space freighter Elsa.
He is diligent in his work and highly trusted by
Matthews and others, but he refuses to talk about
anything other than his name, and his origins
and background remain a complete mystery.

A boy with clear, amber-colored eyes and silver hair. However, his age doesn't seem to match his appearance. What kind of scenery has his eyes seen? What kind of winds have blown through his silver hair? He doesn't speak of his past. However, it's not because he has lost his memory that he doesn't speak of his past.
He works as a crew member on the space freighter Elsa, which conducts business with the Kukai Foundation, but there's something about him that suggests he's more than just an ordinary crew member. His words and actions suggest mysterious events that are connected to a grand history stretching from the past to the future.
Several years have passed since chaos became a crew member of the Elsa. He accompanies Captain Matthews, helmsman Tony, and navigator Hammer on their daily duties, but his true purpose lies somewhere else. One thing is certain: his encounter with KOS-MOS will lead to something he has been searching for. This can be inferred from the words he utters to KOS-MOS, who is "sleeping" in the fitting room to store the energy needed for operation: "Where is the real you sleeping?"
One of chaos' defining characteristics is the unique way he deals with Gnosis. For a physical being like a human to influence Gnosis, it needs to be physically fixed in place by the Hilbert Effect. By fixing Gnosis to be an entity equal to a human, physical attacks become possible. This can be rephrased as fixing the unknown Gnosis into a physically ordered entity and then logically destroying that order. However, chaos can eliminate Gnosis without the Hilbert Effect, leaving it as an unknown entity. It's as if he's dissolving a chaotic entity into an even greater vortex of chaos. It's a force that races along the path to collapse that all existence is headed for. As his name suggests, it's the opposite of order = KOS-MOS, the action of chaos. Perhaps the increase of entropy is the essence of his power.
An ability that is the opposite of KOS-MOS. A name that is the opposite of KOS-MOS. Order and chaos. Woman and man. Machine and flesh. Weapon and human. The relationship between the two forms a symmetry like light and shadow.
Despite being a mysterious figure, he effortlessly connects with people without creating any rifts, and may one day become a guiding presence for humanity.

[Page 016-017 - Translated by machine]

A thing to know if not it looks in while his memory is done is difficult.
Jr.
The Tale Which He Hid...

[Profile]
He is the representative director of the
special foundation, the Kukai Foundation.
Records show he was born in T.C. 4755 and
was adopted by Gaignun, but his actual age
and real name are uncertain. Hobbies are
collecting old books and antique firearms.

He is one of the executive directors of the Kukai Foundation. Records indicate that he is the adopted son of Gaignun Kukai, the Foundation's executive director, but this is not true. Also, although he looks like a boy in his teens, as his nickname "Little Master" suggests, this is also not true. Despite his youthful appearance, he is a person who is knowledgeable, fond of the past, and has influence within the Foundation.
Gaignun Kukai supports the Kukai Foundation from an operational standpoint, while Jr. is responsible for military and direct actions.
Given that the Kukai Foundation is comprised of mutants who are victims of the Life Recycling Act, we can infer that Jr. is also one of those mutants. But where does his mutant ability lie? The key lies in the words of Jr.'s confidante, Mary Godwin: "Little Master has no choice but to remain that size."
He is deeply involved in the tragedy in Miltia fourteen years ago and also has a close relationship with Albedo, who works in conjunction with the U-TIC organization. These past events are deeply hidden in his heart and are difficult to know unless one can peer into his memories. Though he may appear childlike, he possesses the thoughtfulness of an adult, and he never speaks of them.
He favors antique firearms, but his attacks rely not only on the gun's power but also largely on the power of the user, Jr. Perhaps the act of using a gun is merely a supplementary tool to enhance the image of exerting power towards the target. In fact, his attacks possess a power that far exceeds the capabilities of the gun itself. Furthermore, the firing of the heavily armed ship Durandal's main guns is controlled by Jr.'s imagination. From this, we can infer that he amplifies his own power through various weapons, fixes the image of firing, and then uses it.
Appearance greatly influences one's inner self. Although his inner self may be contrary to his outward appearance, the genuine, emotional expressions he occasionally shows evoke the image of an innocent child, soothing the hearts of those who see him. Such expressions are likely an expression of the childishness within him. This childishness sometimes drives him to passionate rages. It is thought that these mental elements are cultivated by his appearance. The impression his appearance gives to those around him, and the way those around him react to that impression--his inner self is shaped by this feedback effect. A person does not establish their self-identity in isolation. They establish their self-identity through their relationships with those around them.

GALAXY FEDERATION GOVERNMENT

In the latter half of the 21st century, for reasons unknown, humanity was forced to abandon the Earth sphere and ventured into space. At that time, travel was done during reaction-propulsion spacecraft, and it took several hundred years to find a habitable planet. Also, because they were traveling at near light speed, the passage of over 4,000 years, including the real time due to the time dilation effect, was only about 1,000 to 1,500 years for humanity. The habitable planet they finally discovered after their wanderings was named Neo-Jerusalem.
After several interstellar conflicts, under the rule of a governing body called the Cardinal Council, an interstellar unified nation was formed, consisting of approximately 500,000 planets, based on the U.M.N. (United Nations Network), which connects star systems via gate jumps, and advanced planetary development technology. This interstellar unified government is the Galaxy Federation.
The Galaxy Federation is a federation of local governments, each possessing a high degree of independence, formed by the local planets or their inhabitants, who are the parties to local autonomy. Therefore, after the establishment of the Galaxy Federation, each star system maintains its independence and autonomy in accordance with federal law. However, it is stipulated that the federal government will exercise voting rights on important matters on important matters beyond the capabilities of local governments, such as interstellar issues.
One of the problems inherent in federalism is the decline in administrative efficiency. This is a common problem for any group that maintains multi-ethnicity based on the premise of equality among ethnic and racial groups. The Galaxy Federation can be described as a dispersed, multi-ethnic nation spread across a vast area of space, and it has succeeded in avoiding the resentment that arises from coexisting with people who are too different within a narrow scope. However, this does not mean that ethnic and religious conflicts have disappeared. The historical fact of the escalation of the war 14 years ago proves this. The political center that manages and operates these inexhaustible problems facing humanity is currently based on its home planet, Fifth Jerusalem.

VECTOR INDUSTORIES

A massive conglomerate. Although an organization belonging to the Galaxy Federation Government, it built U.M.N., created the Realian, a synthetic human used to serve humans, and developed the humanoid terminal weapon A.G.W.S. and the autonomous weapon KOS-MOS as countermeasures against the Gnosis pilgrimage fleet. Through these developments, it has gained control of the military and communications network fields, and has come to wield significant influence over the Federation Government.
The company's headquarters is a massive, free-orbit colony the size of an artificial planet, stretching 1,000 kilometers in length--known as "Dämmerung." Its name signifies the brilliance of the sunrise, a bright sign emerging from the darkness. This is the central hub for the entire group, including its subsidiaries, and also houses the residences of its employees.
Along with the three newly built ships known as the Rhine Maidens (Woglinde II, Wellgunde, and Floßhilde), they are equipped with special anti-Gnosis weapons in their bows and possess the offensive power to wipe out large groups of Gnosis that have been immobilized after the Hilbert Effect is activated in a single blow.
The Compass of Order in the hands of Commander Wilhelm is thought to enable future predictions that take into account uncertainty, based on the vast database of the U.M.N. and the future-determining factors contained in various events that are continuously input independently. However, few know its function or structure. Moreover, it goes without saying that even though the Compass of Order points to the future, it is always fluid and merely a probabilistic entity.
Wilhelm, who governs Vector Industries, has his objectives guided by a compass of order. His plans, which proceed with a comprehensive understanding of all events, are prompting the actions of many people and, like a symphony slowly being woven together over many years, are gradually revealing their full scope.

KOOKAI-FOUNDATION

A special foundation named after a fictitious entrepreneur, fabricated by the Second Miltia government to pool funds for special activities. It is an organization established by the victims of the Life Recycling Law themselves, with the aim of providing relief to victims, establishing and maintaining a livelihood, securing and storing Zohar Emulators, and investigating the facts.
The privatized division, established to secure funding for its operations, has achieved the largest market share in the entertainment and tourism industry, becoming a giant corporation far ahead of its second-place competitor, operating with massive capital backing.
The Second Miltian Autonomous Government, which backs the Kukai Foundation, is skeptical of the U-TIC organization, and one of the Foundation's objectives is to investigate and restrain its activities. Therefore, although it separated from the Second Miltian Autonomous Government as a special foundation in the post-war settlement of the Miltian Conflict 14 years ago, in reality, the two continue to have a relationship that can be described as that of a single organization or force. Furthermore, due to the circumstances of the Foundation's establishment, it has not been disarmed and possesses a military force that is unusual for a single foundation.
Vector Industries is among the main investors in the Kukai Foundation, and a cooperative relationship has been established in terms of supplying armaments. In fact, most of the equipment on the heavily armed ship Durandal is manufactured by Vector Industries.
A gigantic white flower freely navigates the dark expanse of space. Its base, a lotus-shaped, unruly colony, encompasses a continent-sized city, and is so vast that the heavily armed warship Durandal, measuring 4,000 meters in length, stands like a skyscraper on the expansive beach in its center.
Representative Director Gaignun Kukai will conduct business at this colony, but all important items such as the Zohar Emulators are stored on Durandal, and preparations are in place to abandon the colony in the events of an emergency.

U-TIC Organization

UNKNOWN TERRITORY INTERVENTING AND CREATION

The U-TIC Organization was established as a government-controlled organization, with Dr. Joachim Mizrahi, director of the Mizrahi Neuroscience Institute and a leading expert in Zohar research, in charge of a plan to apply Zohar as an energy source and weapon. This plan was heavily influenced by a certain company famous for developing A.G.W.S., and many personnel affiliated with that company were deployed. However, this company is different from Vector Industries, the funder during the Neuroscience research era.
The research progressed smoothly. Simultaneously, development of the prototype for the 100-Series General Observational Realian was also underway. However, just as they were beginning to see a clear path to controlling the Zohar, Dr. Joachim, who had lost his beloved daughter, began to act independently and recklessly. Then, 14 years later, the Miltian Conflict erupted.
After the conflict, the U-TIC Organization faded into the shadows of history. However, the organization itself did not collapse; it continued to secretly strengthen its military capabilities, gather intelligence, and plan and implement strategies without interruption. Then, with the abduction of the 100-Series General Observational Realian prototype MOMO, which contained sealed information about the deceased Dr. Joachim, the U-TIC Organization reappeared on the stage of history.
Few know the purpose of the plan being advanced by Commander Margulis, who is in command at the Pleroma Cathedral, which has been neglected for centuries. It is clear that there is a figure known as the Supreme Commander who never shows his face, but the full extent of the organization remains unknown. They are steadily advancing a vast conspiracy that will involve the Galaxy Federation, the Kukai Foundation, and Vector Industries.
The U-TIC Organization, supposedly created by Joachim, the man responsible for the Miltian Conflict--the beginning of the tragedy--emerges like a ghost from the shadows of history, mobilizing those burdened with cursed destinies and hurtling towards an irreversible tragedy that engulfs the entire universe.

GNOSIS

An untouchable entity. An entity that can only be perceived by the human brain. A living delusion. A symbol of death. That is Gnosis. Humanity has continued its fateful research into this ghostly entity. After obtaining numerous remnants and analyzing their components, the results were remarkably ordinary: water, sodium hydroxide, and salt. How these can become such an entity remains a mystery. No theory or law has been found. Those who come into contact with Gnosis turn white and disappear, like a pillar of salt. However, there are rare cases of those who escape disappearance. These individuals merge with Gnosis and become transformed beings. It has been revealed that Gnosis is capable of merging with other physical entities.
Based on this information, various theories were proposed.
A new virus theory. This theory views each individual Gnosis as a collection of microscopic viruses. The reason why physical attacks are ineffective is explained by microscopic voids that allow physical impacts to pass through. Furthermore, the whitening that occurs when touching a Gnosis is said to be a symptom caused by viral infection through contact. In addition, fusion with a Gnosis is explain as a change in the body's composition caused by viral infection.
Furthermore, there is a theory that Gnosis is merely a temporary form adopted by beings from another dimension to exist in this world. The establishment of spatial distortion navigation by the U.M.N. has made the existence of higher dimensions more readily apparent, which also supports the reality of this theory of multidimensional beings.
Numerous other theories exist, and the true nature of the Gnosis phenomenon remains unclear. Following the death of Dr. Joachim Mizrahi, a leading expert in the field, the pace of research has slowed. Currently, research into how to address the Gnosis phenomenon is progressing based on the foundational research he left behind.

The conflict surrounding the Zohar

Confrontation involving ZOHAR

* Zohar and the Galaxy Federation Government *   The Galaxy Federation Government investigated the disappearance of the planet Ariadne and organized a fleet centered around the newly built warship Woglinde, manufactured by Vector Industries, to recover Zohar, which was drifting in the affected area. They are promoting a plan called the Zohar Project to counter the Gnosis, which are a threat to humanity.

* The Zohar and the Kukai Foundation *   Supported by the Second Miltian Autonomous Government, 14 years ago since its establishment after the Miltian Conflict, it has been responsible for the storage of Zohar Emulators. Coincidentally or by chance, it also secured the 12th Zohar Emulator that caused the destruction of the planet Ariadne, thus possessing all of the Emulators.

* The Zohar and the U-TIC Organization *   Conducted experiments using Zohar Emulators in an attempt to open the door to Lost Jerusalem, resulting in the destruction of the planet Ariadne. While they were the organization that created all the Emulators, the manufacturing method was lost with the death of Dr. Joachim Mizrahi.

* Zohar and Vector Industries *   Keeps an eye on the U-TIC Organization's movements targeting Zohar, and assists the Kukai Foundation and the Second Miltian Government. While the organization itself is not seeking a Zohar Emulator, its leader, Wilhelm, has ulterior motives separate from Vector Industries.

A.G.W.S.

The system is abbreviated as A.G.W.S., an acronym for Anti-Gnosis Weapon System. Unlike the history of conventional crew-type weapons, which had steadily increased in size, a significant reduction in size was required. This was to counter the invasion of the Gnosis. The Gnosis are elusive and can slip through outer walls and bulkheads and directly enter living spaces, making close-quarters combat inside ships essential. Therefore, the development of powered suit-type weapons that were as small and lightweight as a large passenger car was required. Furthermore, their form is not limited to humanoid, and various types of units exist depending on the location of operation and purpose.
The A.G.W.S. manufactured by Vector Industries is not officially in mass production, and is being used experimentally by special agencies and some units of the Galaxy Federation's military as a pre-trial for civilian sales. It has also been supplied to the Kukai Foundation.
After trials, the system will be sold to the private sector. Potential markets include the aviation industry, which has a need for escorting spacecraft. The Kukai Foundation's business division, namely the entertainment and tourism industry, will also be a significant market. The Gnosis are hostile to humanity, and there is no difference in the level of danger they pose to military personnel or civilians.
The A.G.W.S. was developed not only by Vector Industries but also by Hyams Heavy Industries, and there are significant differences between the two companies' designs. Hyams Heavy Industries' A.G.W.S., which has a head start over Vector Industries', has established a mass production system and has been officially adopted by the Galaxy Federation and others. However, the later-developed A.G.W.S. from Vector is superior in terms of specifications.

Story Line #1-3 KOS-MOS Simulator--Woglinde

[Kenya ~ KOS-MOS startup experiment]

A.D. 20XX. Earth. Kenya. Lake Turkana.
A strange, intricately carved ruin was discovered at the excavation site. When a silver plate was inserted, a massive tremor shook the ground, and a bizarre corridor emerged from the lake. An eerie glow enveloped the corridor. A temperatureless glow spread through the space, forming a gigantic golden plate. This plate materialized, extending a pillar of light into the sky. Clouds swirled around the pillar of light, bands of light dripped through the gaps, and rain poured down upon the earth.

T.C. 4767. A golden plate drifts in outer space. The gigantic black ship, the Woglinde, heads out to retrieve it. Small recovery craft are launched from the Woglinde towards the golden plate, securing it from both sides. A worker in a spacesuit touches the surface of the plate to finish it. A white light emanates from the contact surface, and the worker vanishes. Complete disappearance. Subsequently, using a ring system that can track targets without touching them, several small recovery craft are used to recover the golden plate.
Unaware of the unusual events outside, an activation experiment for a combat system called KOS-MOS was being conducted in a temporary development room of Vector Industries' First R&D Division, located within Woglinde.
Encephalon Dive. A simulation of KOS-MOS' activation and behavior within a virtual space. Shion Uzuki, the chief research engineer for the development of the android modeled after a young girl, enters Encephalon, fights alongside KOS-MOS, and collects various data.

Allen Ridgeley thought, "I hope she doesn't do anything reckless." He was in love with his younger boss, Shion. What exactly is love? Allen wasn't the type of person to ponder such things. He simply worried about Shion's safety because he wanted to be by her side.

Collecting data through combat with target drones, Shion skips the initial tests and orders an experiment to be conducted at the level where the Encephalon collapsed during last month's activation test.
The Encephalon was fluctuating. This was a simulated space constructed within KOS-MOS' main network as a site for activation experiments. The outside world was perceived through KOS-MOS' sensory organs.
Although subject and object were separated, for Shion Uzuki, who was diving into Encephalon through KOS-MOS, it was the real world itself. The subject perceives the outside world through the information it has perceived. And that outside world was wavering.
"Target, shift to real mode. We'll test Hilbert. KOS-MOS, activate Hilbert Effect," Shion said. KOS-MOS obeyed.
Shion conducted an unplanned experiment to activate the Hilbert Effect. In a development project that involved many people putting in tremendous effort, Shion used her personal authority to take reckless action. While hoping that KOS-MOS would never be deployed in actual combat, her contradictory actons in pushing forward with this reckless development suggest a strong attachment to the Hilbert Effect.
Immediately after KOS-MOS activated the Hilbert Effect, the Encephalon began to collapse. This was an inevitable consequence of executing an unplanned program in an unstable situation.
The collapse of the outside world is progressing rapidly. The Encephalon construction program lurking beneath the surface of the perceived outside world is exposed and begins to shake. The shell of the world that resembles reality peels away, revealing the true nature of the world. As if reacting to the Hilbert Effect, Gnosis-type target drones begin to shrink, emitting a glow. At the center of that glow, a girl appears and gazes at Shion.

[Side profile] Allen Ridgeley
After graduating from Bormeo University, he joined Vector Industries' First R&D Division. As Shion's assistant, he works as the deputy chief of the KOS-MOS Development Project Integrated Operation System Development Office. His family seems to be wealthy, but he doesn't like to talk about his background.

[Page 147 - Translated by machine]

[KOS-MOS Simulator ~ Bridge]

Within the decaying Encephalon, the real-type Gnosis target transforms from a translucent form into a luminous, glowing entity.
Just a little further. Shion thought, looking up at it.
If the Encephalon were to collapse, Shion's subject, which perceives it as part of the outside world, would be dragged down and collapse as well. However, Shion, witnessing the torrent of newly acquired experimental data on the Connection Gear's monitor, was unable to stop the experiment of her own free will. She was drawn in by the flowing information as if possessed.

Allen saw a monitor flashing red repeatedly in the lab and heard a warning sound. He groaned in frustration as he monitored the Encephalon inside.
It was the same last month.
It's painful to watch someone you care about being in mortal danger. Moreover, that danger is something they themselves brought upon themselves.
During the KOS-MOS activation experiments, every time Shion, the lead engineer, dove into the Encephalon to measure the limit, Allen's chest ached as if it were being gripped by a devil's hand.
"Why does the supervisor do such reckless things?" Allen cried out in his mind.
When conducting an experiment, one should not be afraid of failure. However, one must avoid rushing into irreparable failures. Failures that do not lead to future improvements must be absolutely avoided. This should be a fundamental attitude for researchers. We must never repeat the mistake of someone dying.
More than anything, Allen couldn't bear the thought of losing someone he cared about.

At the center of the target, which has transformed into a luminous body, the figure of a young girl emerges.
A girl whose name Shion didn't know gazed at her. Shion, too, gazed at the girl. Something connected the two of them.
A connection. That feeling was born in Shion's heart.
Where did that feeling come from? Shion, who had a keen intuition since childhood, trusted her instincts. That's why she was captivated by the sense of "connection" she felt towards the girl's apparition.
Amidst the chaotic waves of the Encephalon collapsing, Shion focuses on the strange sensations that have begun to sprout within her own heart rather than the fluctuations of the outside world. Forgetting that she herself will disintegrate along with the Encephalon in just a few seconds, Shion continues to gaze into the girl's eyes as if drawn to them.
It was Allen who made the salvage dive to save her.

The Woglinde, carrying the recovered golden plate, sailed silently, escorted by several battleships. On the bridge, the captain, first officer, and crew were in conversation.
"It's been 10 days since we recovered that object. It's been a constant source of tension."
"The initial objective of this operation was supposed to be, under the command of the Galaxy Federation Government, to investigate the planetary destruction incident and escort the investigation team. But ever since we recovered 'that object,' it seems like everything has changed. What exactly is that thing?"
"We haven't received any reports from the survey team. However, the information I mentioned the other day is certain that 'those guys' are also after that object. Of course, that's unofficial information."

[Side profile] Mysterious girl
Encephalon, a virtual space where the relationship between pure information, perception, and reality is programmatically established. At its collapse, a girl suddenly appeared. Appearing in the space between reality and fiction [immaginary], the girl continued to gaze at Shion, as if trying to convey something.

[Elsa ~ Inside the Giant Gnosis (Cathedral Ship)]

As Elsa travels through hyper space, she is struck by a shock. Forcibly dragged into normal space, she finds herself surrounded by a terrifying number of Gnosis. KOS-MOS activates the wide-area Hilbert Effect. After that, Elsa is swallowed up by a massive Gnosis.
A colossal Gnosis, so large it's called a cathedral ship, on a planetary scale. Shion, chaos, Ziggy, MOMO, and KOS-MOS regained consciousness inside the giant Gnosis, having been dragged out by Elsa.
Having detected Elsa's signal and the signal of the Zohar Emulator that had been stolen from the Woglinde in the past, Shion and the others headed towards the signal point, aiming to reunite with the other members and escape.
As Shion and her companions explore, they discover a sign for the Ariadne Central Shopping Mall. It was as if the planet Ariadne had been transformed into a Gnosis state.

Andrew, separated from the others, was hallucinating scenes of the planet Ariadne, which had been destroyed in the Zohar's runaway accident. The faces of the people who had rejected him. A past he didn't want to acknowledge, didn't want to accept.
The memory of being betrayed by the woman he believed to be his wife. The unstable mental state that never disappeared even after undergoing personality reconditioning treatment. His wife's words that seemed to deny everything about him. Feelings of hatred. The memory of killing his wife. Repeated murders and countless personality reconditioning treatments. Margulis visits Andrew, who possesses unique physical abilities as a mutant of life recycling. Andrew, who hates and attacks all humans. Margulis' words spoken to Andrew, who was not accepted by anyone and whose existence was simply erased from society. The joy of having his existence accepted. The conversation he had with Margulis afterward. The memory of experiencing the joy of being accepted by others for the first time. The days when he believed he wouldn't regret sacrificing everything just for that.

Having reached the center, Shion and her companions discover Zohar. Information from KOS-MOS' databank, including details about the original Zohar and Zohar Emulators, proves that it is the Zohar Emulator stolen from Woglinde. However, Shion was unaware that such information existed in KOS-MOS' databank. Shion had no idea when, who, for what purpose, or how that information had been entered.
"You're the developer of that thing, and you didn't even know that?"
Andrew appeared before Shion and the others and spoke. His body had become semi-transparent. As Andrew spoke of the secret of Ariadne's disappearance, a mysterious glow emanating from the Zohar entered him. Then, Andrew, now a Gnosis, attacked Shion and the others.

Margulis says that humanity, consumed by consumption and forgotten about creativity, has no value in life. His words affirm me, and give me purpose and meaning in life.
"Happy"
Shion resonated with Andrew's heart. Andrew's feelings flowed into her.
The gray other side. A dialogue between Andrew and Shion. Created as a tool of conflict, yet unable to find meaning in his existence, he was left behind by the changing times. He thought he was rejected by the world, but it was he who was rejecting the world. A land of the other side, with no past or future. The happiness of being able to melt into this place. "Shion, you will come here soon," Andrew said before disappearing.
Having escaped with Elsa, Shion and the others are pursued by countless Gnosis. KOS-MOS blows away and absorbs the Gnosis, whose numbers are too great to be annihilated even by Durandal's ship cannons.

[Kukai Foundation ~ Miltia 14 years ago]

This world was created as a result of the memories of Shion and others resonating with KOS-MOS' inner world. It is a world that changes according to those who share a common spatial and temporal experience. In this world, the memories of Allen, chaos, and Ziggy are not reflected, and the memories of Shion, MOMO, and Jr. are selected and prioritized.
The Realian Febronia stands in the church within that memory world. Her presence brings back horrifying memories for Shion. Shion desperately tries to deny the past she doesn't want to remember.
Febronia guides Shion. Nephilim support her as she confronts her painful and tragic past.
Deep within Shion's heart lies a blood-stained hospital. A facility for treating severe neuroses. The room where Shion's mother was hospitalized. A place haunted by painful and sorrowful memories. Her father's corpse. Her mother's slumber. The writhing spirits of the dead.
Albedo, the white-haired boy, laughs. Jr., too, was being afflicted by hallucinations.
A monster appears before their eyes. A symbol of fear, created by the memories of Shion and Jr.

As Shion and the others overcome their fear, a clear blue sky suddenly opens up before them. A beautiful meadow. Two girls are running around a giant tree. They are Febronia's sisters, Cecily and Cathe. Febronia explains that this is a scene that Shion and the others are seeing through the components of the Encephalon. However, it is a curse imposed by a system created by humans to control the Zohar. A prison of reality from which there is no escape. Febronia asks for her sisters to be released. Nephilim explains that their release is necessary for the survival of all things, both Realians and humans.
Nephilim and Febronia can only exist within this realm of consciousness. They can only interfere with the real world for a brief moment. That is precisely why they guided Shion and the others--to change the future.
U-DO is the consciousness that caused the local event [phenomenon] shift 14 years ago, destroying the Miltian sector. The clash between U-DO, awakened in the liberated Old Miltia, and KOS-MOS, who has returned to her true form, will cause the stars to shatter. That is said to be the future.
However, the future that can be seen as a vision is merely one of an infinite number of possible events. Small waves change the future. That is why it was necessary to confront the past. Shion made direct contact with Gnosis. However, without becoming a Gnosis, she remains "as Shion." Nephilim tells her that there is great meaning in that. If you go to Miltia, you will understand everything.

Seeing Shion's tears, Allen was filled with loneliness. He was angry at his own inadequacy. The weakness of not being able to accept the tears of the person he loved. The weakness of not being able to cry for her. His own weakness made him feel lonely and sad. But someday, surely. That's what he thought. It was a strong feeling rooted in reality.

Having deactivated KOS-MOS' deep-level protection, Shion and the others safely return to the real world. Thanks to the recovered memory data of KOS-MOS, Shion and the others are enveloped in the Song of Nephilim, having cleared their names. Only chaos, Jr., Gaignun, Wilhelm, the man in the red cloak, and Shion notice the song. Suddenly, the Galaxy Federation fleet is sunk. A massive army of Gnosis appears one after another, centered around the Kukai Foundation colony. In the midst of this chaos, Albedo appears in a humanoid fighter jet that far surpasses the capabilities of the A.G.W.S. As Shion and the others drive out the Gnosis that have invaded the colony, MOMO is kidnapped by Albedo in the ensuing confusion.
At that moment, the Galaxy Federation fleet, cornered by a massive Gnosis army emerging from the Kukai Foundation colony, turned its cannons towards the Foundation in order to strike at the source of the problem.

[Side profile] Nephilim
A girl who does not exist in the physical world. Having existed through eons, she was called Nephilim from the very beginning. She works with Shion and others to change the future where the world collapses. However, her true identity remains a mystery.

[Side profile] Febronia
A Realian, who is believed to have been in Miltia 14 years ago, is said to have met Shion in the past. Her appearance is identical to the girl in the vision that Lieutenant Virgil saw in his dying moment. However, like Nephilim, she now exists only in the world of human consciousness.

[Page 255 - Translated by machine]

[The Song of Nephilim ~ Proto Merkabah]

MOMO became aware of it within the Song of Nephilim. There, she made contact with the Kirschwasser, inherited her memories, and learned of Albedo's existence. As MOMO ventured deeper into the darkness, she saw countless Kirschwasser corpses lying at her feet. Albedo's laughter echoed. Albedo, with a body that transcended death, approached MOMO, repeatedly severing his own arms and neck and regenerating.

Just as the Galaxy Federation Army was about to unleash a salvo of main gun fire on the Kukai Foundation, the Dämmerung of Vector Industries appeared, and the Rhine Maidens annihilated the Gnosis with a salvo.
Later, Shion, who is on the bridge of the Durandal, receives a communication from the Dämmerung. Using a PT cartridge transferred by Shion's junior, Miyuki, the Song of Nephilim materializes. Joachim Mizrahi's greatest and worst invention, which summoned the Gnosis and caused the destruction of Miltia. That is the Song of Nephilim.
At the heart of the Song of Nephilim, Albedo awaits Jr., corrupting MOMO's heart and memories. She takes a part of him to move forward. To Jr.'s accusation, "You've been contaminated by U-DO," Albedo laughs, "I've evolved." The U.R.T.V. were created to eliminate U-DO. However, Albedo, who once accepted U-DO's energy, had forgotten his original purpose and gone berserk. After obtaining the Y-Data sealed in MOMO's subconscious in order to go to Old Miltia, Albedo attacks Jr., drawing out his power and seeking something.
Having had her mind corrupted, MOMO accepted Albedo's power. With that power, she neutralized the powers of Albedo and Jr. MOMO blossomed, fueled by the experiment involving Kirschwasser. Jr. and Shion interrupted Albedo as he told MOMO about Joachim's actions.
At that moment, a man in a blue cloak suddenly appeared from thin air. The two men pointed out each other's roles. The man in the cloak seemed to be in league with Albedo. Within the Song of Nephilim that Albedo had left, the man in the cloak attacked Jr. and his companions, saying, "The laws governing this world are different for you and me." Then he addressed chaos, saying, "Right?" as if to say that chaos, like himself, was a being that transcended human laws.

After the figure in the blue cloak departs and the Song of Nephilim ceases to function, Shion and the others attempt to destroy the Song with the Kukai Foundation's main cannon. However, the remaining Gnosis merges with the Song. Albedo reappears and brings forth the Proto Merkabah. The Proto Merkabah is the place where MOMO was born. It was created to discover the true nature of the universe and the ideal form of humanity. It is said that when the Proto Merkabah, the Song, and the Zohar work together, an irreversible situation will occur.
The main cannon of the Proto Merkabah, synchronized with the Song, instantly obliterates the Galaxy Federation fleet. Furthermore, the Proto Merkabah absorbs the Gnosis floating around it, just like KOS-MOS did when she absorbed a large army of Gnosis in the past. And then, its main cannon is turned towards Second Miltia.

As Jr. and his friends boarded the Proto Merkabah to destroy it, Albedo appeared before them, and a figure resembling a man in a cloak burst forth from his body. Albedo explained that this was the fundamental power of the human heart. He confronted Jr. with the past, saying that 14 years ago, when Jr. closed his heart, the chain of hearts among the U.R.T.V. members was severed, and everyone was invaded by the Song. Albedo laughed, saying that thanks to that, he was able to find the path to a new world. He declared that everything that had happened was merely entertainment on the way to reaching that new world.
Is the final battle that befalls Shion and Jr. merely a preview for a new battle to come?

[Side profile] Miyuki Itsumi
A system programmer belonging to Vector Industries' First R&D Division. Later transferred to the Second R&D Division. Her hobby is filing patent applications, and she is always engrossed in new inventions, using Shion and the others as test subjects. She frequently submits expense claims for everything, which troubles her superior, Shion. A woman who is true to her own desires.

[Side profile] Virgil
Virgil, who was supposed to have died on the Woglinde, is a being who transcends death. A being who transcends physical limits. His appearance was identical to that of the man in the red cloak who was with Wilhelm.

The MYSTERY   in which it was sealed

The remaining enigmas. The fixated past, the decided future, the present wavering factors that can change the future. The tale being spun. The phenomena waiting as in an ambush. (intro unfinished)

[Machine version of intro]
The remaining mysteries. A fixed past, a predetermined future, and the present, the fluctuating factor that could change the future. A story unfolds. Various events lurk like ambushes. The present is a grand preview of the future. The mysteries of the present are stripped of their secrecy as the light of the future shines upon them. However, we, who only know the present, can only uncover the hidden mysteries and imagine the past and future. This may be different from the true nature of the mystery. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the mystery exists, and that it will eventually reveal itself. Let us believe in this and turn our attention to the remaining mysteries.

__What is Zohar?__
Zohar. An object referred to in the Shining Light scripture of Kabbalah. It seems to contine to exist in perpetuity. Humans who could not procure the Original Zohar instead construct Zohar Emulators. However, even the copies of the Original Zohar manufactured by humans cause a person who touches them to vanish; as well, they have the power to obliterate a planet, and to summon Gnosis. Why is it called the Phenomenon Mutation Engine? Does it have the power to derive one future from the infinite number of possible phenomena? Or, can it change the laws of phenomena that exist in our own dimension?

[Machine version of "What is Zohar?"]
The Zohar. This object is named after the Kabbalistic scripture, "The Book of Splendor." It has existed for what seems like eternity. Humanity, unable to obtain the original Zohar, constructs Zohar emulators. However, even these emulators, merely artificial creations that are imitations of the original, possess the power to not only make those who touch them disappear, but also to destroy planets, and to summon Gnosis. Why is it called the Event Shifting Engine? Is it a power that can derive any future from among countless possible events? Or is it a power that can transform events existing in our dimension into entirely different laws?

__For what purpose was the Zohar Relic created?__
The Zohar Relic discovered on the Earth in the year 20XX: who created it, and why? The relic found on the shore of lake Turkana in Kenya was obviously created by humans. The structure that was sunk into the middle of the lake. It seems like it can be explained as ancient Zohar isolation-storage equipment, but then, who created it? It was an ancient device with systems that differ greatly from our human technology. Also, what was the role of the activation key, the small Zohar-shaped plate possessed by the discoverer? Also, what was the light that shot up into the air from the Zohar? What is the meaning of the rain that then fell on the earth?

[Machine version of "What was the purpose of the Zohar ruins?"]
Who built the Zohar ruins discovered on Earth in 20XX, and for what purpose? The ruins found on the shores of Lake Turkana in Kenya were clearly man-made. A structure submerged in the lake. It could be interpreted as an ancient Zohar isolation and containment device, but then who built it? The ancient ruins suggest a system different from human technology. What is the small Zohar-shaped plate that the discoverer possessed, which served as the key to activating the ruins? And what is the meaning of the light emitted from the Zohar that materialized in mid-air? What does the rain that subsequently fell on the ground signify?

__What is the relation between Virgil and Realiens?__
Virgil, Star Cluster Federation First Lieutenant stationed on the Woglinde, is the guy who said to Shion, "There's no need to try to understand Realiens". However, in the Miltia Dispute of 14 years ago, he was dismantling Realiens in both hardware and software. Moreover, he has adopted that into his own body. Assimilation. Why would a man who assimilated them in order to understand them in a deeper way, say "There's no need to try to understand"? Why is he so negative toward trying to understand Realiens? What is his relation to Febronia, who he saw in his dying moment on the Woglinde?

[Machine version of "What is the relationship between Virgil and Realien?"]
Lieutenant Virgil, a member of the Star Cluster [Galaxy] Federation military stationed on the Woglinde, told Shion, "There's no need to understand the Realians." However, 14 years prior, during the Miltian conflict, he had dismantled the Realians from both a hardware and software perspective. Moreover, he had incorporated them into his own body. Assimilation. Why would someone who has undergone assimilation, the deepest form of understanding, say "There's no need to understand"? Why did he try to understand the Realians, and then come to reject them? What was the relationship with Febronia that he witnessed in his dying moments on the Woglinde?

__What is the reason that Shion did not turn into a Gnosis?__
According to Jr., "people who have come into direct contact with a Gnosis either die by turning into a pillar of salt [Sodom/Gomorrah, anyone? -j] or they turn into a Gnosis", with no exception. However, Shion came into direct contact with a Gnosis on the Woglinde, and this has not happened to her. If Shion has escaped from death and tranformation, will there be some other effect? Is her ability to sense the Song of Nephilim one part of this effect? Can her ability to sense KOS-MOS's location when escaping from Proto Merkabah also be explained by this?

[Machine version of "Why does not Shion become a Gnosis?"]
According to Jr., "Those who come into direct contact with Gnosis have only two possible futures: they die as pillars of salt, or they transform into a Gnosis." However, Shion, despite having come into contact with Gnosis on the Woglinde, has not followed either of these paths. Assuming Shion escaped death and tranformation, what other effects might there be? Could Shion's perception of the Song of Nephilim be part of this effect? Could her sensing of KOS-MOS's location during her escape from the Proto Merkabah also be part of this effect?

__What is the meaning of what Andrew said at Higan?__
(According to my dictionary, Higan is the equinoctial week, when Buddhist services are held. This question seems to refer to Andrew when he shows up on the beach in some alternate world. I'm not sure what equinoxes have to do with this.)

[Machine version of "What do Andrew's words in the afterlife mean?"]
Andrew, who had spent his life tormenting himself, unable to accept the world and unable to be accepted by it, finally arrived at a place of nothingness. A land beyond, where everything is accepted and dissolved. There, he found his unmistakable self. A place where Andrew, who could not adapt to the dreams born in the gap between himself and others in society, found his final rest. He told Shion, "You too will come here some day." Do those who are accepted into the other side, beyond time, know the future? Or did Andrew, who rejected reality, find something in Shion that connected her to himself?

[Comment by Trexalfa:
The intro and the character profiles have some interesting stuff in them, and there's basically a summary of the entire plot that comments on certain scenes from a 3rd person, omniscient point of view. But the true meat I've taken a glimpse at is the section about the remaining mysteries. There's a lot more that's worth commenting than what I'm about to point out, but in the section "What is the Zohar?" you have the paragraph finishing with this:
"What is the reason for it being called a "Phenomena Modification Engine? Does it possess the power to derive a future from among countless potential phenomena at will? Or perhaps it possesses the power to modify the phenomena existing in our dimension into an entirely different set of laws?"
[The] Guide also brings attention to the identity of the people who built the ruins it was found in, the nature of the mini-Zohar plate that's used as the key, as well as the fact that the Zohar made it rain, as if it had a deeper meaning.
Full list of mysteries is: "What is the Zohar", "For what purpose were the Zohar ruins built", "Connection in between Virgil and Realians", "Why Shion didn't gnosify", "The meaning of Cherenkov's words to Shion on the Beach", "Shion's past", "Ziggy's past", "Joachim Mizrahi's past", "What are the Gnosis", "Who is at the helm of the U-TIC Organization", "Margulis and Pellegri's past", "The complete picture of Project Zohar", "Lost Jerusalem", "What is U-DO", "What are URTVs", "What is the connection in between the special abilities of the Variants and U-DO", "What went on during the Miltian Conflict", "Mary and Shelley's past", "Identity of Joachim's teen genius assistant", "Connection in between chaos and KOS-MOS", "Who is Nephilim", "Who is Febronia", "What is the true nature of the men in mantles", "Wilhelm's true nature".

[Study Guide comment:
Since the Zohar Emulators were created before humans lost access to the Original Zohar, it does not make a lot of sense for this text to say "Humans who could not procure the Original Zohar instead construct Zohar Emulators." Perhaps it is an oversight or the result of poor communication between Monolith Soft (Takahashi) and the writer of this section of the book?]

[Page 425 - Translated by machine]

[Machine translation of "What happened in Shion's past?"]
What is the root of the desire to understand the Realians? Understanding an object is synonymous with overcoming and dominating it. Does Shion want to accept the existence of the Realians by understanding them, or does she want to dominate them? The root of desire lies in the darkness of the heart, which even the person him/herself does not understand. To find it, it is necessary to dig into the past. The "Song of Nephilim" that she saw from the window of the hospital in Miltia where her mother was receiving treatment. That was the research that Joachim Mizrahi was involved in. What did young Shion see and experience there? And what is the meaning of the surname Uzuki?

[Machine translation of "What happened in Ziggy's past?"]
What were the circumstances that led to his death as a human being? What drove him to suicide during his time in the Federal Police a hundred years ago? The various situations that torment a person's mind are created by the person themselves and those around them. People's actions, people's thoughts, drive people to the brink and kill them. Who was involved in the circumstances that drove Ziggy to the brink? Ziggy continues to live, his heart still tormented, even after a hundred years. Are the people who created the factors that tormented him no longer alive? Or, like Ziggy, are they still alive, transcending time?

[Machine translation of "What is Joachim Mizrahi's past?"]
A genius neurophysicist known as a madman. Joachim Mizrahi, who made many contributions to humanity, but whose final research led to him being called an unparalleled madman. He is said to have summoned Gnosis into this world, but at the same time, he created 100-Series Observation Realien to counter Gnosis. Why did he make the prototype resemble his beloved daughter? What was his relationship with Juli Mizrahi? Why did he seal the Y-Data in MOMO? Why are there differences between Joachim's words and actions as remembered by MOMO and his words and actions as perceived by society?

[Machine translation of "What is Gnosticism [Gnosis phenomenon]?"]
Despite various theories circulating, its true nature remains a mystery. Only research and development into methods of dealing with it is steadily progressing. By using the Hilbert Effect to physically fixate it, a means of countering Gnosticism [the Gnosis phenomenon] has been acquired. Humanity, however, is not learning to understand the true nature of Gnosticism [the Gnosis phenomenon], but rather using it as a means to eliminate it. What is Gnosticism's [the Gnosis phenomenon's] reason for targeting the Zohar? What is their reason for targeting humanity? Will the true nature of Gnosticism [the Gnosis phenomenon], which the Kukai Foundation has been unable to grasp even after securing and analyzing the remnants, ever be revealed?

[Machine translation of "Who is the head of the U-TIC organization?"]
The Zohar is intended for use as an energy engine and for weapons purposes. Having been formed and operated underground since the Miltian conflict 14 years ago, the U-TIC organization has accumulating military power as an anti-government group, deviating significantly from its original founding intentions. Who is the person known as the leader of this organization? It is based in the Pleroma, a sanctuary of an ancient religion, but is there an ideological reason for this? Or is it simply a case of utilizing a discarded asteroid? Considering that presenting a new worldview through ideology and religion is effective in igniting a large number of people into exclusive actions, there seems to be some ideological motive at play.

[Machine translation of "What is the past of Margulis and Pellegri?"]
U-TIC Director-General Margulis and Deputy Director Pellegri, it seems their past dates back to the organization's founding. Why did they come to belong to the U-TIC organization? What past experiences shaped Margulis' belief in being a chosen people despite feeling pangs of conscience, reconcile his thoughts and actions? These questions can only be answered by understanding their past. Will the time come when their relationship and the past that befell them are revealed? And what does the future hold for them?

[Machine translation of "What is the full scope of Project Zohar?"]
The initial intention of the U-TIC organization, and the goal of Dr. Joachim Mizrahi before he was called a madman, was to explore the essence of everything. There is no doubt that the Zohar was involved in this plan. However, it is uncertain whether that plan and the currently ongoing Project Zohar are exactly the same. This is because the original plan at the U-TIC organization was formulated before Gnosis became apparent, and given the close connection between the current Project Zohar and Gnosis, it can be inferred that there have been significant changes to the plan's content. What is the full scope of that plan?

[Study Guide comment:
It is interesting that the mystery about Shion's past asks "what is the meaning of the surname Uzuki?" Perhaps this mystery is tied to the Realian Vwud Uzuki from a screenshot in the Proto Merkabah section of the pre-order art book for Episode I, and/or Shion's "step_mam" from Episode I's internal game files, characters that seem to either have been cut or were abandoned by the new writer of Episode II and III. Since "step_mam" can be seen lying dead on the floor beside Shon's mother's bed in the Episode I Encephalon flashback, it seems the latter is more likely.
I also wonder if there was meant to be more about the past of Margulis and Pellegri originally, since their past is included in this mysteries section. I am also not sure we ever got the full scope of the Zohar Project, since it remained an anti-Gnosis project but transferred to the military under Dmitri Yuriev's direction, and the Episode III database merely says the project began with research into using the Original Zohar as an energy generator. We get more answers on this from the ODM than we get from the games themselves, which I don't think was the intent.
]

[Comment by Trexalfa:
Regarding the true nature of Project Zohar, from Episode I, the ODM and this guide too, what I gather is that, when Juli speaks of Proto-Merkabah and its role of discovering the true form of the universe, as well as the shape humans should have had, she's actually referring to the aim of Project Zohar as intended by Mizrahi. That's what I gather from all the clues: Zohar actually receives its name from the Kabbalah's Zohar book because it's supposed to be the "key" to everything. Mizrahi thought its study would unveil the truth about the universe itself. In fact, in Episode III, it seems research on the Zohar allowed him to discover the universe's structure, as he knew the U.M.N. actually was built using the Collective Unconscious as its foundation.]

[Page 426 - Translated by machine]

[Machine translation of "What is Lost Jerusalem?"]
Earth, the home of humanity. Humankind has abandoned this home, relocating to modified planets and artificial colonies, based on a main planet known as the Fifth Jerusalem. The term "Fifth," meaning the fifth main planet, suggests the existence of four other Jerusalems (main planets): Neo, Second, Third, and Fourth. For what reasons were these lost? Where is Earth, the first main planet, now called Lost Jerusalem? Why are people striving to reach it? Could the discovery of the Zohar on Earth hold the key to the answer?

[Machine translation of "What is U-DO?"]
One of the worst events of the Miltian conflict 14 years ago. While it can be understood from people's conversations that U-DO is a conscious entity, its true nature remains a mystery. Albedo's significant psychological impact after being contaminated by U-DO indicates that it is an entity that directly affects people's consciousness. Furthermore, visions of the future suggest that it is a wave-like entity surrounding the planet. In addition, Jr. and Gaignun's conversations contained expressions that seemed to personify U-DO. However, the background, era, purpose, and creator of U-DO all remain a mystery.

[Machine translation of "What is U.R.T.V.?"]
Jr., Gaignun, and Albedo are known as U.R.T.V. and are understood to be involved with the Life Recycling Act. Their official name is U-DO Retro Virus, and they are also called U-Retrovirus. According to the U.M.N. database, they are bioweapons with the anti-existence wavelength of U-DO, and it is said that 669 of them were produced by the late Dr. Dmitri Yuriev, head of the Yuriev Institute. It is also said that Dr. Yuriev is the genetic father of U.R.T.V. However, their purpose remains a mystery.

[Machine translation of "What are the differences in abilities between Albedo, Gaignun, and Jr., and what is their relationship to U-DO?"]
Just as there are significant differences among humans based on race, gender, and individual differences, U.R.T.V.s, even those born from the same embryo, also possess individuality. This may be the product of artificial genetic manipulation through induced mutation, but for them, it is an innate, heavenly individuality. Albedo is a formidable [... with] the power of immortality, backed by the ability to regenerate the body at lightning speed. Gaignun [and Jr. ...] One possesses the ability of hypnosis, the power to interfere with people's consciousness through the medium of [his] own voice. The other [Jr.] possesses the power of immortality through growth control. But how do these powers relate to the significance of the anti-existence of U-DO?

[Machine translation of "What was the Miltian conflict?"]
The Miltian Conflict, which occured 14 years ago, was a major historical turning point related to [the Gnosis phenomenon]. The details of this epoch-making conflict can only be seen in fragments of individual memories, and its full scope remains elusive. How did the conflict begin, engulf the planet Miltia, and further involve the entire Galaxy Federation, leaving such profound repercussions 14 years later? Because members of the U-TIC organization have infiltrated the Galaxy Federation government, there is a high possibility of information manipulation, and the Federation's official statements likely contain discrepancies with the facts. What, then, are the truths?

[Machine translation of "What is Mary and Shelley's past?"]
The two women who assist Gaignun and Jr. and command Durandal were both taken into the care of the Kukai Foundation about 12 years ago. Mary was born in the Miltian star system, and it is known that both Mary and Shelley were experimental subjects illegally owned by a pharmaceutical company. However, the circumstances under which they came into the care of the Kukai Foundation remain a mystery. What kind of sights have their eyes seen? And what kind of wounds do they carry in their hearts?

[Machine translation of "Who was the child prodigy who worked as Joachim's assistant?"]
The Contact Subcommittee is investigating Joachim's former assistant. Who was this young man who, despite his youth, wielded exceptional talent as Joachim's right-hand man during his time at the Mizrahi Cerebral Sciences Research Center? Even his fate remains unknown. However, it is hard to imagine that someone deeply involved in Joachim's research would then forget all about it and live a life unrelated to the trends of the times. Given that Vector Industries was once a funder of the institute, it has been suggested that he may have become an employee at the company, but no one alive who fits that age range has been found.

[Comment by Trexalfa:
I'm guessing either something changed in between this book and the ODM or this stuff is basically just down to typical unreliability for guidebooks to have.
There's more weird stuff: I've been able to ascertain that this guide says that the first capital planet for humanity after Lost Jerusalem's loss is called Neo Jerusalem, just like in Perfect Works. In fact, it says so a grand total of two times; the next capital after Neo is lost is Second Jerusalem, going with this guide. Yet, the ODM also says that, after Lost Jerusalem, it's Second Jerusalem that was made the capital planet. The Complete Guide also affirms that it's a mystery why humanity is now living in Fifth Jerusalem, and why the other capital planets were lost; the ODM affirms that it's just a result of humanity's blood smeared history, and I don't see why that'd be a mystery, unless they were going to do more with this piece of lore. I am wondering if it's related to the Vessels of Anima: in the DS remake, Takeda wrote an original scene in which chaos and Wilhelm speak of different, specific incidents in which the Vessels were used as weapons, which is also something the Episode III Perfect Guide hints at (namely, that they've shown up numerous times across human history, but always as weapons); Takahashi did say in an interview that those scenes had to respect the lore of the series for them to be included.
More on the weird side, apparently Mary and Shelley's past was important enough to be mentioned as an upcoming mystery (namely, the circumstances that led them to be under the protection of the Kukai Foundation, drawing attention to the fact that they were used by some pharmaceutical enterprise, as well as to the wounds they might bear in their hearts, or what their eyes see. None of this was ever relevant in Xenosaga, from memory alone).
]

[Study Guide comment:
I am not sure the reason for the URTV Variants' special abilities and their relation to being anti-existences of U-DO were ever properly answered. A conclusion can be drawn that Albedo's regenerative immortality and Jr.'s growth immortality are experiments to counter death, something Yuriev associates U-DO with, but that does not explain Gaignun's ability of hypnosis and influencing people with his voice. We never even got to see Gaignun use those abilities.]

[Page 427 - Translated by machine]

[Machine translation of "What is the relationship between chaos and KOS-MOS?"]
To protect Elsa as she re-enters the atmosphere, KOS-MOS heads outside the ship. She passes chaos, who calls out "Wait!", and disappears through the door leading to the rear hatch. The ship sways. At that moment, chaos' lips move as if calling out someone's name. But no voice is heard. What is chaos saying? Is it "KOS-MOS"?
Or perhaps it was a call to the "real KOS-MOS," as contained in the words chaos once spoke to KOS-MOS, where she slept: "We finally meet. Where is the real you sleeping?"

[Machine translation of "Who is Nephilim?"]
A mysterious girl appears beside Shion. She isn't drawn to Shion's unique trait of not facing death [by saltification] or transformation [into Gnosis] despite being exposed to Gnosis. This is because she appeared around Shion even before her contact with Gnosis. As a formless being existing in the realm of consciousness, is she perhaps an existence unbound by the constraints of physical time? She seems to be trying to interfere with history by projecting the past, present, and future as visions into people's minds and guiding their actions. Will the time ever come when her purpose and reason for existence are revealed? Who is she?

[Machine translation of "Who is Febronia?"]
She appears to be a Realian, but according to MOMO's analysis during the Encephalon Dive, she's subtly different. This is probably because she's become a being similar to Nephilim. Febronia, who was once a Realian, is thought to have been in Miltia 14 years ago. This is because her image is in the memories of Shion and Virgil, who were there at the same time. When the deep connection between the Realians and the Miltian Conflict is revealed, will Febronia's role and her current situation also become clear? Her sisters are also thought to be a major key to understanding the era.

[Machine translation of "Who are those wearing cloaks?"]
The deceased Virgil has been resurrected, clad in a blue cloak. The resurrected Virgil has become a being beyond the limits of humanity. By whose hand, and for what purpose, was he resurrected? Albedo's words, "Are you a newcomer? [The new guy?]", suggest that many other cloaks also exist. This implies that Albedo and the person in question are acquaintances. Furthermore, the voice that spoke to the resurrected Virgil's head was one that enforced organized control over his actions. In other words, it is thought that an orderly organization has been formed for some purpose. Who is the man in the red cloak who is with Wilhelm? What is their purpose? Everything remains a mystery.

[Machine translation of "Wilhelm's true identity"]
Ostensibly, he is the founder and head of Vector Industries, and is said to have held the position of President of the Cardinal Council of the Galaxy Federation until 10 years ago. However, there is a contradiction between his career history and his apparent age. Is he undergoing growth suppression? Is he using cloning for hereditary succession? Up to this point, he can be considered within the realm of an entrepreneur who uses technology to overcome the fear of death. However, the fact that he is accompanied by a man in a red cloak suggests an unusual background. Furthermore, his gaze at something called the "Compass of Order" and his actions that seem to foresee the future strongly highlight the uniqueness of his existence. Who is he?

[Study Guide comment:
I think most of the mysteries brought up on this last page were answered. Though I am curious if maybe Febronia's sisters were meant to play a bigger role in the original plan?]
